Dear Heaven Maker:
Our world has certainly had more than its share of bad news lately.
The bad news has made us hungry for good news. We want balanced journalism that also gives us concrete examples of what is working in our world.
I’m not talking about fluff stories about cats playing, or dogs singing, but stories about people who are actually making a difference, stories that shine a light on the goodness of people, stories that inspire and give hope. These stories do exist and they are being reported on as part of a new, emerging trend in journalism called Solutions Journalism.
While journalists usually define news as ‘what’s gone wrong’, Solutions Journalism expands what news is by emphasizing that ‘what works’ is also news. By adding coverage of solutions, journalists tell the whole story, and journalism is a force for good in the community.
The European Journalism Centre has recently partnered with the American-based Solutions Journalism Network to launch The Solutions Journalism Accelerator. The Accelerator will provide more than four million dollars in grants, mentoring, coaching, resources, and knowledge transfer in the next three years.
The European Journalism Centre believes that resilient, inclusive, and progressive journalism needs to be supported, strengthened, and developed. Their mission – reimagining what journalism can be.
The Solutions Journalism Network is an international non-profit committed to the adoption of solutions journalism in daily news across the world. The Network wants to transform journalism so that all people have access to news that helps them envision and build a more equitable and sustainable world.
