“The elephant in the room” is a phrase that refers to an obvious or controversial problem that no one wants to talk about. It’s uncomfortable, it’s awkward. It’s an issue that everyone is aware of but stays away from.
“Mouse in the room” is a phrase developed by David Wood and it refers to something about you, something that you’re feeling or thinking, that the other person may not know about. An elephant is BIG, a mouse is small. They’re both important to well-being.
When you ignore your own ‘mouse in the room,’ you separate yourself from others. This leads to disconnection, less energy, and often, to misunderstanding. If you manage or are part of a team, your chances of meeting your goals and reaching your full potential also diminish.
When you practice noticing and naming your mouse, you facilitate greater connection with the people around you. When you identify and artfully name it, you increase your capacity to get more of what you authentically want in relationships.
In “Mouse in the Room”, David talks about this process and the immense power of being authentic.
